I am wincing a bit as the paint jobs are rough but they are done and I am willing to live with that....sort of.

This is the first time I have used my new lights for a photo shoot. I used some sheets of foam core as the base and background. I have been planning on doing hobby videos for Youtube just to explain and demonstrate some of the simpler techniques I use. So I ordered a couple of cheap single-light units and a Blue Yeti microphone and stand, I just need to learn how to edit video. The first one is explaining casting using silicon rubber and resin.
Mawloc
The Mawloc has a much more sinister profile I think, having used a carnifex torso which is smaller than the one that comes with the kit. This necessitated the sculpting of an extra armour plate at the torso/pelvis join. As Slovak noted in the previous post, the grip plates were cast, then heated with a heat gun to bend them into shape. And I can not stress just how useful a heat gun is for these projects so it is a useful tool if you can spare the funds.
Trygon
The Trygon is a FW model that I have had for about 10 years I think. I like the base work especially as I liked the image of the Trygon burrowing up and snaking around a ruined Imperial statue, the column slowly collapsing as the Trygon emerges from the ground. I also included a burst pipe with Termagants emerging to represent the ability of the Trygon to allow another unit to emerge from it's tunnel.
Not much of a paint job to look at. I just wanted to point out that the broken, corrugated conduit on it's base is a plastic bendy straw. There were a few single models I completed like this one, a Ravener, and a Tyrant Guard. I may take a photo of them later.
The future
I recently just completed a Stone Crusher Carnifex and am 50% through the second one (with one more Carnifex on deck after that. And the paint jobs are rushed but... I just want this stuff done. After the Fexes, I still have 3 Venomthropes, 5 Zoanthropes and a Neurothrope, A Lictor and Death Leaper, and finally 10 each of termagants and Hormagaunts. Then on to the Eldar which will involve my first attempt at painting an army with an air brush.
So far I have completed 20 Genestealers, 1 Patriarch, 6 Warriors, 1 FW Trygon, 1 Mawlock, 1 Tyrant Guard, 1 Ravener, 1 Red Terror, a Tervigon, and a Tyranocyte. I have been rushing these as I am looking to get as much done as possible and they are strictly table top quality. I have been having issues not only with my eyes but also with arthritic pain (growing older sometimes blows) so I have been looking to get a large volume of models done.

For now I have a few Mawlock and Tyranocyte shots. Still working on two more Tyranocytes before I am off in Carnifex land. An endless horde indeed.

First off the Mawlock. I used a Carnifex torso as I was using the larger Mawlock torso for an Old One Eye conversion. The Mawlock looks a lot more hunched and sinister. And while I understand that the torso is not convenient for a burrowing creature, neither is a burrowing creature of this size that can travel through the earth at speed. So....yeah.

The 3 Tyranocytes have been modeled to represent 3 different phases of the pods descent through the atmosphere. One is modeled with all armoured flaps out and the bottom tentacles retracted; the second has the 3 back panels open with the tentacles extending to the ground; the third has all armoured panels closed and is supported on it's tentacles. This model is the second phase. I used a heat gun to bend the tentacles. if you try this for the first time be very careful as it is easy to melt the styrene plastic with a heat gun. Keep the gun in constant motion so that you heat the piece evenly.

PS
Yes I did get lazy about sealing all of the the gaps between the plates. Like I said, table top quality.
I powered through 7 new warriors (including the Prime). I also completed another 20 Genestealers and the Space Hulk Patriarch. I spent some time on the Patriarch but at least one of the photos is slightly out of focus.

I will do another set of photos just to show the conversion work. the painting is not by best but hey, I guess this is me getting older. Arthritic hands and a worsening diminished near-sighted ability (even with my bifocals) has made it harder so I focused more on getting them table-top ready. While I did incorporate some of of the Space Hulk Stealers because they look good and I have them, I did convert a lot of regular multi-part stealer kits as well as some extensive re-positioning on the warriors. That should be up by tomorrow.

So for now a group shot of the work All but the 6 warriors on the back-right and the back row of genestealers are the newly completed models. Have moved on to the Forge World Trygon that has been unfinished for many years.
The point is to focus my attention on the massive model backlog I already possess in order to prevent myself from acquiring new models/armies. For example the new Custodes release is very tempting, especially those jetbike models.

So anyway I decided I needed a Tyranid Prime and sourced the head piece from a bits service. When I finally started working on the model is when I realized that the Prime model also includes extended shoulder and back armour. Rather than waiting I decided to do a delve into a rather extensive Nid bits box and came up with what you see below. I added some of the extra armour pieces to the model's back and used a ripper to represent a snapping tail.

The swords are from the Hive Tyrant kit as I wanted the Prime to have different looking swords than the warriors it leads. They are a little on the large side but mostly work. The hands are a bit large but they do not attract a lot of attention. In recognition of this though I have named this beast Lana.

Lighting for the photos sucks as I just held it under a lamp.
Since Ferrum Ira had a more menacing, shooting pose I felt it would add to the model to have the banners hanging down and looking like they are being rippled by a slow breeze as the titan takes aim.

The Honour Banner hangs a little low but I am not looking forward to trying to re-hook the banner so it is staying there. I expect that it would make a persistence knocking sound as the titan moved. I had thought of a story about a previous Princeps, Devram Soluhn, who had ordered the banner raised prior to his first outing as commander of Ferrum Ira. Unfortunately a series of explosions in a promethium refinery overloaded Ferrum's void shields, meaning that the wild Macro Canon shot fired from an enemy engine encountered no resistance as it traveled straight at the titans cockpit. The entire crew was lost in that single shot, and Ferrum Ira was left as battlefield wreckage until the campaign had been won and it was retrieved and refitted. Pallox Mourve, the current Princeps, had the banner returned to it's traditional position, fearing that the machine's spirit had been insulted by the actions of the previous Princeps. That single battle with Devram Soluhn is the only time Ferrum Ira had fallen in battle.

I have yet to change the Titan's name on the leg and put it on the scroll work on the carapace. Still this beast is table-top ready. Now will I ever get a chance to field it?
Probably not but I am happy with how my titan maniple has turned out.
I think I need a bit of a break from such a large project.

The banners for Filum Sector include the two Kill Banners hanging from the weapons and the Honour Banner hanging between the legs. As I had modeled the Warhound as if it is stalking forward I wanted the banners to contribute to the impression of forward movement.

Originally I was going to use fine chain to hang the banners but did not like the options I can up with to get them to hang backwards as if being blown by wind. in truth some low viscosity superglue probably could have provided a fine enough coating to hold the chains in place but I decided to go a different route. Years ago I had purchased some cheap bracelets that were essentially fine metallic springs. So I used wire stock to pin the banners in place and then slid a sheath of wire coil around this to give it a more cabled look. The Kill banners are hanging by magnets and can be easily removed for transport. The Honour Banner is glued in.

Both titans still require decals but again, I want a break from this. This was also a good excuse to try out the new lighting rig I ordered. It can be used for miniature photography too and it seems to have worked fairly well.
Latin names I can make up. So the Reaver has been dubbed "Ferrum Ira" or iron Wrath. Short, brutal, but most importantly short.

I decided to redo the banners as some parts of the original set looked sub-par even by my generous standards. Instead of trying to copy the banner styles from the "Doom of Mymeara" Forge World book, this time I went back to the original source material: the Adeptus Titanicus and Codex Titanicus rule books. This was the first place the War Griffons were ever represented (including several other well known legions such as the Warp Runners and the Tiger Eyes).

The colour plates from the Codex Titanicus rules expansion went over the different type of banners and their iconography. They were a lot more colourful as were the War Griffons colour scheme compared to the relatively muted scheme being used by Forge World currently. So I decided to use this basic format.

Doing banners I now prefer to cheat i.e. us a photocopy or printout of the desired banner and paint that in. This sounds a lot easier than it actually is as there is a lot of fine detail and I usually lack the patience to do these properly. For mine I actually had to construct icons like the Legio "T" and princeps badges so while I did use the pictures of the original banners I also did replace some detail with my own. In truth this way is a simple way to throw together a banner and is equivalent to using transfers to decorate a banner.

The banners are arranged into 3 types:

Weapon kill banners hang from the weapon (no surprise). I used a mixture of colours to represent the heraldry of the individual moderati. The Apocalypse launcher on the Reaver is going to be a bit harder as there really is no way to hang a typical kill banner. I may mark kills on the side of the launcher or design a different banner.

The Legio Order banner is usually flown from a carapace hardpoint. The Legio symbol is nearest the flag pole with the eagle of the Divisio Militaris in the corner. The Imperial aquila is also in black against a yellow background marking the titan's dedication to the Legio Militaris and by extension, the Imperium. For the Reaver's Order banner I also included the Heresy Banner campaign badge earned by the titan during the heresy. It shows a griffon's claw savaging an eye of chaos icon and is given to titans in the order who have faced traitor engines in battle. Usually this is flown as a separate banner but i decided to incorporate it into the Ferrum Ira's Order banner instead in order to make it stand out compared to Filum Sector.

The Honour banner is hung between the titan's legs and incorporates the princeps' rank badge on the banner and displays kill markings for the princeps while piloting this titan. The Ferrum Ira's princeps is a "princeps seniores" as represented by the 12 lug nuts arranged around the badge and the whilte feathers on the legio icon (which have still not been painted in).

The princeps of Filum Sector is more junior and thus currently has the 4 lug nuts earned upon elevation to princeps and awarding of their own command of a battle titan.

The kill markings are as follows. Chaos stars unsurprisingly represent traitor engines; the diamonds represent Eldar titans; the triangles represent ork titans; and the circles represent unknown war engines. And I have just realized that I have to paint over the Chaos kill markings on Filum Sector's Legio banner as this titan does not have the Heresy banner included. Alternatively I can leave the kill markings and just use Ferrum Ira's Legio banner on Filum Sector. Again because of the Apocalypse launcher, mounting a banner on the top of the Reaver is going to look weird. So I was already considering having the Legio banner on Filum Sector only so this may be the easier solution.

Below I included shots of the banners as print outs and the painted versions (except the Honour banners, they are just the print outs). Still not the fine job I would prefer but see my above comment about my patience and the lack of it. I have started the mountings for the banners and will put up shots when they are completed. There is a shot of the magnet housing pieces that I carved and used (from plastic tubing). They will all be magnetized as I only want two kill banners per titan and they have to interchange with all of the weapon options.
I am really disappointed that you can not equip the Volcano canon on the carapace mount in the Reaver's rule book entry.

I have not done any decal work yet and have to plan out the banners for this titan. I will probably complete these as well as a set for the Warhound as I wanted to rework some parts of those. I have yet to settle on a a name for this titan that I like. Currently it is "Furore Imperatoris" which is most likely a shitty online translation for "Fury of the Emperor" but I find this name too generic and boring.

Both titans will have honour banners hanging between their legs and kill banners for the weapons. I am debating if I also want to add the Legio banners on to the carapaces of the titans. These may look neat but I will have to plan those out, especially the Reaver as it may have to be mounted either on or behind the Apocalypse launcher.

I was also playing with the idea of making a bas relief set of legio icons and casting them up to use instead of decals in some areas. To this end I managed to track down griffon head bits from the AoS GW line and may use these as the griffon heads in the icons. Still thinking about it though.

Anyway here is the Reaver ready for table top use at the very least.
My apologies. In short work has had some rather serious issues that have upended everything really. By June things should be more or less back to normal.

This Christmas break I started painting the Reaver and dedicated about 6 weeks in total getting it to this point which is essentially table top quality. I still have the banners and decals to do but I need a break from working on this model.

For anyone who cares, this was all brush work as with the Warhound. I tried painting in other details on the flat parts and some of it works for me (on the twin engine cowlings at the back-top of the carapace) and some doesn't (on the yellow "gorget" under the head). But there is good, then there is good enough. Nice to see you again "Good Enough". You always make things easier.

All painting used GW paints and some Vallejo metallics. I will do a better photo shoot of the model once I glue in some of the missiles in the launcher.
I was pleased to see that the size of my converted Storm Eagle has pretty much the same footprint as the Fire Raptor. Conversions like that, especially without another model as a reference, always concern me somewhat as I do not want an opposing to player to think that I would model for advantage on the table-top.

As is usual with my FW builds I screwed up and glued the guide rails to the backs of the side weapon pods. The end result is that the autocanons are locked pointing downwards. I can easily adjust this with some plasticard and magnets but in truth, that's the way I envision those canons being used primarily so I am good with it for now.

As is usual there is a selection of SW icons cast and added. I replaced the top hatch with the central image from the Grand Annulus ) from the floor of Logan's sleigh....seriously, a sleigh pulled by wolves...). The conversion looked rough but I am waiting until after the priming step to make the final adjustments.

So I will hopefully have the interest to go back to painting. What to paint now....didn't I say something before about Space Wolves? Anyway crappy pics as always....
monkeigh2000http://www.blogger.com/profile/11994735612160618420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7941082274045267714.post-3756536895557464152016-12-05T15:17:00.000-08:002016-12-05T15:17:08.959-08:00Space Wolf Thunderhawk because it is current year.A new project, just to keep the theme of the blog.

I was wanting to finish assembly on a few larger projects before the weather got too cold to prime models outside and I almost made it with this one....almost.

Anyway I had purchased a Thunderhawk model from e-bay years ago and to be honest, judging by the quality of the cast (i.e. poor) and the lowness of the cost, I think it may not be a FW original. Still work to do and all that. So I had to do a significant amount of repair and hiding work for some of the larger cracked pieces. I had decided that this ship would be a Space Wolf craft and have endeavoured to make it look like one.

I mounted the model using a piece of pvc piping and a t-junction piece that was trimmed down and sunk into the craft's underbelly, so this monster can plug into and out of it's base. Aside from the cockpit the interior will not be done or even visible as all doors will be glued shut. This was a decision I made based on the amount of work that would be required and it just does not compute for me. Besides the craft is modeled coming in with it's airbrakes slightly opened and the ailerons extended to slow the craft down...I know, like a flying brick needs something to disrupt it's aerodynamic curves.

The pictures are not great as the unprimed set were quickly snapped upstairs in the living room. The primed photos were taken in the basement with a poor attempt at better lighting. Oddly this project is starting to get me in the mood to get back to painting Wolves. I want to complete a major army this year and it will either be Wolves, Eldar or Nids. Wolves have the most progress and they are the nearest and dearest to my heart so they look likely. Another consequence of this build however is that I have a Fire Raptor that has been sitting for about a year, so I am going to assemble that beast before I break out the brushes.

So yeah, this happened for no reason at all. I am consistent in my inconsistency.

I managed to do a mass priming of the Reaver Titan parts that I had assembled. I pretty much had everything ready for priming barring the weapons themselves. So I had quite large stack of model parts to transport. Long story short, laziness and stupidity wins, I tried to carry them all at once using a flat surface, and I dropped the whole leg assembly down the basement stairs. It was one of those moments where you realize something shitty is happening and it plays out in slow mo for your enjoyment. So I watched numerous toes and pistons and broken joint collars spin around the basement floor.

Now I have enough experience with modelling that I am confident that I can repair the damage. It was not a whole flight of stairs at least. It is just frustrating that a better decision on my part would have avoided this. So yeah, there it is. The next update will be more positive. I just felt a need to share. Not wanting sympathy, just sharing.
I had just finished the Space Wolf project, then jumped into the Gothic stuff which did not meet the terms of the original plan. So in order to refocus myself I have decided to start work on the Reaver titan while I still remember roughly how I painted the Warhound.

I will also need a a name for this titan model too. So far it's waist is at the top of the Warhound in terms of height. While the price tag is scary enough, just the sheer size of this thing is at the limit that I am willing to have. A warlord is definitely out of the question...unless I built my own. Which will never happen.

Anyway below are shots of the Reaver's legs and base.

The various pistons on the Reavers legs and hips are a rather tedious part of the build. I will caution you, if you are planning on assembling one yourself, that you attach the waist pistons as you glue the waist together. It is a pain to get them in there later.

I did the toe pistons one at a time, initially only gluing them to the toe socket by having them in place as the glue dried. the back leg was difficult as it is in the process of stepping and required some bracing to keep the feet and toes in their proper places.

The shin armour assembly recommended that you glue the supports into place as you glue the armour into place. I did not do this, then found the armour support brackets did not line up with their attachment points on the lower part of the legs. However I solved this with a cup of hot, microwaved water.

Caution: Heating water in the microwave can be dangerous as water in a clean, featureless container can super-heat without boiling, and then simultaneously boil once it is disturbed. This translates roughly into it being possible for water heated in a microwave to superheat and erupt out of the cup when you pick it up. Look at your water as it heats up. If you see it boil you should be find. As a precaution a wooden splint can serve as a nucleation point for the boiling bubbles to form, so place one in the water be fore you heat it up in the microwave.

Anyway by immersing both armour pieces together and letting them heat up, they both become quite flexible. You can then place them on their attachment points and adjust their shapes to better conform to where they will be placed. Note that it important to fit both halves of the armour at the same time. they need to line up properly at the front of the leg and this is best achieved with both sides being fitted at the same time.

And so it begins...

The base was made with a hard board circle from a cable roll and part of a grid from a fluorescent light. I originally was going to do a full grid using an insect screen but opted instead for panels of plasticard to fill it in. Since the Reaver is taking a step forward I made the base a stepped two level. The addition of random techie bits fills in the base and brings it in line with the Warhound's base.
Me neither apparently.

The models sit in silent vigil over my work station as I allow my attention to go while. I almost called it my focus but as will be seen, that word is not appropriate.

First off I was asked to bring out the Eldar for the weekly gaming group as no one else was using them. I did not want to as I knew that my attention would become rather elf-centric. And lo that is what happened. I worked on a converted set of Shining Spears, assembled two more Dire Avenger units, assembled a unit of Wraithblades with axe and shield, assembled a Shuriken canon toting Wraithlord, and finally dramatically posed my FW Wraithseer.

The first shots show how I cut up the Wraithlord legs to reposition them for a few more posing options.

The Wraithblades were also extensively reworked to give them more dynamic and threatening poses.

The primed Wraithlord is an old assembly from a few years ago. Not really happy withit now but too lazy to change it.

The Wraithseer is just too boring in it's stock pose so mine is ready to fight but is casting a psychic power.

The Eldar are now on hold, Check the next post to see why. Squirrel!

Only the Wraithlord and Wraithblades are included below:
I am toying with the idea of getting back into this game system and have started by rousing my chaos and imperial fleets. I am trying to keep the paint jobs quick and simple....right.

I had painted up a 1500 pt imperial fleet that I used in a local tournament years ago. I modeled the fleet after the book 'Execution Hour' by Gordon Rennie, a fun read. I had since added a retribution class battleship but that work dates back years.

I am painting up a Planet Killer in TS colors. Despite the fluff there was only ever one built and it was reported destroyed towards the end of the Gothic war, though it's hulk was never recovered....unless it was. Maybe, I don't know.
Will probably get a game on it this week. It may also see some action as a Necromunda board as well but those are plans for another time.

Now what do I work on? I am probably going to force myself to complete unfinished projects that were started. There is still a lot of Space Wolf stuff that has been assembled and primed. But then again...

Anyway a few shots of the completed board with the light kits in and working. The board needs a few touch ups and weathering but it is effectively ready to go.

I will be completing the priming of the remaining pieces for the board today. these are primarily the doors / launch elevator for the runway area and a couple of other detail pieces. My goal is to just get the board to a mostly done state. If I decide to go into detail on the board, well there is a large amount of work involved in that and I am not relishing the experience. I will probably spend an afternoon just with a small palette picking out lights and control panels.

I will need to decide how to seal up the paint job on the board and will hopefully be be motivated enough t play a game on it next week. i also have a friend interested in using the board as part of a Necromunda league. That works too.

Of course I am already looking at what is next. There's an old joke about how women are interested by what is on TV while men are interested by what else is on TV. I think I need to keep focused on my Space Wolves for now to get the projects I started completed. Photos will be posted as I go.

P.S.

I never did note before but I had screwed up the priming on the larger pieces. Because it was a case of mass priming I got lazy and apparently at times was spraying from too far a distance. So in a few small places the primer coat was very grainy. I just painted over it as mindlessly as possible and have noted the lesson for future projects. Overall the impact is not huge but it is there, mainly on one of the gantry pieces.

Just a few shots for the record of the work in progress.

Used a copper shade by a brand called Basic that I bought at a local art store (Michael's but other do carry the line). this will be followed by a gold dry brush (which is unfortunately virtually transparent at times over the copper and may require several dry brush passes with time for each coat to dry). Then a light dry brush of an almost equally transparent silver. What? I got the stuff because it is cheap. The effect over all is quite nice too and the coverage is not as bad as I have characterized. It does require some care in applying and I am trying to rush this process.

After this stage I will return to applying a mechanicus red-like colour in places, mainly the vertical surfaces. I intend to using a stippling technique on the main walkways to show wear and tear and a painted floor made little sense in such a place... to me anyway.
I have healed up enough that I spent some time getting the base coats on the boards themselves. I have used a combination of metallics (copper, gold and silver) and mixed an approximation of mechanicus red to pick out some of the armour plates and make the board look more visually interesting rather than leave it fully metallic. The fun part will be remixing the same shade of red for the structures that will go on the board.
They are both stock units with a flamer and a power fist/power weapon option for each. Each unit will also have an attendant Rhino transport.

I am mostly done painting unit one. I had originally planned to avoid any yellows in the units but a) I have already violated this "rule" with some of my dreads and, b) I needed an easy way to designate the different units from each other. Unit 1 is mostly done and the palate was a bit darker than I expected. Still they are mostly done and I am good with it for the most part. There are still some details that need to be touched up but the look of the unit is set.

And in case anyone is wondering why the dark skin tones? I have always had a mix of skin tones in my SW army. Not for any PC reasons but simply because I wanted to try working with darker skin tones to see how they would turn out. This is just a continuation of that. And since at 10 men I can only have one weapon (Sword or fist) the two models are actually meant to represent the same Blood Claw pack member. My Ultramarines are an army in which all un-helmeted models are of darker skin tones. This was the continuation of my skin tones experiment and is now a part of that army. Besides I imagine that racism is now really a problem in the dark future. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, in a universe where you have Orks, Eldar, Chaos, and so on it would make more sense that black and white would work together to beat the crap out of green.

I do not believe I have taken any WIP shots of this unit to show the posing but that is evident in the second set of photos. The beige pieces are those that I had cast. I have numerous copies of the SW shoulder pads and the Blood Claws pads so that all of the shoulder pads are embossed rather than using transfers. On some models you can see the putty work done. It is this that makes marine models a joy to convert. A model can be easily sectioned at the joints, the corrugated portions carved out, the pieces pinned and positioned, and then a wad of green stuff and an x-acto knife are all you need to cover up the work. So on this unit you can see the positioning. And I just wanted to note that I have resisted the urge for years to do a model in a kicking pose. I finally caved but this guy looks more like he is kicking in a door. I can live with that.
I have already spotted the unfinished muscle bits on the hind limbs and will take care of that. Everything else is done. I said done!!

Good enough to field and it looks like it belongs with the rest of the Tyranid army. This is the last gargantuan creature that I have to paint for the my hive fleet. I swear I am getting back to the Space Wolves now...seriously.

Shot in natural light because I am lazy and still have not prepared a proper photographing area. Something I will be looking into in the coming weeks. Next week will see a stop in my progress as I have a minor surgery scheduled but it should not hold me back too long. Maybe.
I used bleached bone (or the equivalent) to lighten up the purples, the teals, and the grays for the whole model. It adds an odd warmth to the colours as they get lighter. Anyway the sequence shows the change in highlighting the model. It shows the first and second highlight that was dry-brushed on the upper and lower wing surfaces.
The beast is in a colour scheme that matches the rest of the the Hivefleet, though I am debating putting something different on the membranous portion of the wings. So here is the starting work on this creature. I will be asking the other Nid players if anyone has a gargoyle brood that needs a lift.
But they should have the desired effect and are not the focus of the model anyway. They were glued and formed to look like they were being blown back by the forward movement of the titan.

I like the fluff around the moderatii and princeps having their own banners marking their achievements. I intend to continue this affectation for the eventual assembly project that is the Reaver (suitably latin-like name TBD)...probably later this year...much later.

Anyway some poor shots of the banners in progress and at the mostly completed stage. I have to decide how to secure them to the weapons and titan. The flag posts supporting them are made from aluminum tubing with the thicker portions being essentially a jacket made from plastic tubing that fits over the aluminum tubing. The eagle head decorations are from a knight titan kit.

Not sure if I mentioned it but the name, 'Filum Sector' is my shitty Latin translation of the name "Thread Cutter". If anyone out there s fluent in Latin and is laughing their ass off at the name, don't tell me. I'm not redoing the damned banner. It's mostly done!
